AAD2012 Exhibition and air show going green

This year’s Africa Aerospace and Defence exhibition and air show, AAD2012, is going green with the implementation of a digital greening project to decrease the show’s carbon footprint.

AAD2012 will be held at Air Force Base Waterkloof in Centurion from September 19 to 23. This showcase of aerospace, defence and security-related technologies will open for three days followed by two public airshow days.

“The key benefit of digital greening is the saving of costs on printing, layout and delivery of brochures,” says AAD2012 marketing manager Vhongani Shumba. “By promoting elec-tronic communication as far as possible, for items such as etrade invitations, enewsletters, an e-exhibitors’ catalogue and an eshow daily magazine, we ensure less paper is produced for the show – paper which is often discarded and therefore wasteful.”

AAD2012 aims to further increase global awareness of South Africa’s aerospace, defence and security industries and to bring global industry players together to showcase their latest technological innovations that contribute to the high-tech economy. “The exhibition also aims to create and sustain technically valuable jobs and to expose the youth to the high-tech world of aerospace and defence,” says Shumba. “To this end, AAD2012 will feature business and media conferences, symposiums, vehicle and aircraft demonstrations, parachute drops and public aerobatic displays.”

High-level representatives of the South African government, local and international trade visitors, international decision- makers, key players in the South African defence and general aviation industries, as well as the media and enthusiasts, are expected to attend the seventh biennial exhibition.

The number of national pavilions has increased dramatically from seven at AAD2010 to ten: China, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Russia, India, Romania, the UK and the US.

This event, the largest exhibition of air, sea and land capabilities on the African continent, is hosted by the Commercial Aviation Association of Southern Africa, the Aerospace, Maritime and Defence Industries Association of South Africa and the Arma-ments Corporation of South Africa. Substantial support is also received from national government with the cooperation of the departments of Defence and Trade and Industry.

An important element of the exhibition is the youth development programme for learners and students to take part in inter-active activities, such as plastic model build- ing, virtual aviation, simulation, target shoot-ing, first-aid and the intricacies of crime scene investigation.

The youth programme celebrates its tenth anniversary in 2012.

Industry representatives will be on hand to provide more information about a variety of careers in the aerospace, defence and security industries. An exciting new attraction exclusive to AAD2012 will be a fun fly park for light sports aircraft types, coordinated by the Aero Club of South Africa
